Director of Photography
Bob
has been a well-known name in the film industry for over twenty-eight years.
Winner of the Gemini and Gold Camera Awards, he has worked on a number of
internationally released, youth oriented television series, as well as working
on many features. His work includes DOP on the "Danger Bay" series
(88 episodes) winner of the Gold Medal as Best Television Series in the Youth
category at the International Film and TV Festival, New York. Further work
on TV Series includes "21 Jump Street", "Ritters Cove",
"Wiseguy", "MacGyver" and ""Beachcombers".
Bob adds to his credits the Feature film "Jumanji", where he enjoyed
reminiscing with Robin Williams on the mischief of being kids. Additional
Features to mention are "Bird On A Wire", "The Journey of Natty
Gann", "Clan of the Cave Bear" and "Home Is Where The
Heart Is". He has worked on many Movie of the Week productions such as
"Can of Worms", "Dog's Best Friend", and "Up River".
As a Camera Operator, Bob has worked on various films including "The
Expert", "Odyssey III", "Two Of Hearts", "Ghost
Cop", "Madison", "The Penthouse", "Trial of
the Incredible Hulk", and the sequel "Death of the Incredible Hulk".
Born
and raised in Calgary, Alberta, upon graduation Bob worked at the Glenbow
Foundation Museum where he became interested in Art, specifically Cinematography.
He made the journey to study Art at the Art Centre in Los Angeles. During
a school break, Bob shot a student film on mountain climbing with a group
of friends and sent it to the Production Company Crawley Films in Ottawa.
They immediately offered him a
full-time position in the Camera Department where he shot over 30 documentaries
before going freelance. As an Assistant, then Operator in the early days,
Bob had the opportunity to work on many Films with the Austrian Cinematographer
Frank Stokes, who wrote books on Cinematography, still used by film students
today. Over the next two-year period Frank became Bob's personal trainer,
and was a major influence to Bob in learning film lighting.
EXPO
86' in Vancouver, showcased Bob's work as Director of Photography on the Disney
Circle Vision film "Portraits of Canada", shot with 9 cameras and
projected in a specially built theatre that surrounds the audience. One of
the highlights in Bob's career was flying with the Canadian Forces "Snowbirds",
431 Air Stunt Pilots, filming in 70mm show-scan parts of the film. This film
still plays at the Epcot Centre in Florida.
Bob's work with Bowes Productions Inc. started in 1998 on the YTV of Canada half-hour Halloween Special "Twisteeria" and has continued since then. Producing his own Wilderness Ecological Films, Bob returns to his passion to Produce, Direct and Edit many independent cinema productions. As a creative, highly talented, world renowned D.O.P., Bob is an indispensable member of the Bowes & Associates team.
